Is Your Baby Ready for the First Pair: When to Buy Baby Shoes?

Baby shoes are just so cute and adorable. Some parents got so excited and they purchased pairs of different colors and designs for their little ones. They are so eager to put these shoes on their cuties’ little feet.

But the question is, is your baby ready for his or her first pair of shoes? When can we say that he is ready for it and when is it time to buy baby shoes?

There’s a time when it is better to go barefooted

The average time when babies started learning to walk is between 10 to 18 months. But do not force your baby if she is not yet ready. Like we often say, development in babies varies.

The baby’s first steps are considered a milestone that every parent awaits, documents and celebrates. But once she started her steps doesn’t mean its already time for her to have her first shoes. Why? Medical experts and experienced parents suggest that it is better for babies to walk barefooted while learning since she will be practicing indoors. That means that the first pair is reserved once the baby can confidently walk outside the house.

In the first phase of learning how to walk, why is it recommended for babies to be barefooted?

Experts say that being barefoot improves foot grip. The baby will learn balance and coordination while walking if she is barefooted. It also encourages good development of the feet, as it is free from the restraint of fitted shoes and socks.

But you can opt for socks and booties especially during cold weather. Choose those with non-skid soles for safety.

But as soon as your little prince and princesses can walk on their feet, that is when you can start collecting and buying baby shoes for them.

Some points to consider when buying baby shoes

  1. Take your baby with you when you buy her shoes. There are qualified children’s shoe fitter that you can ask if you are not sure about the size of what you are going to buy. Adjust the size to allow space for the feet to grow. Feel the toe area. There should be a 1-centimeter allowance from the longest toe to the edge of the shoes.
  2. If the shoes require the baby to wear socks, try the shoes with socks on for a more correct and comfortable fit.
  3. Check the soles of the shoes. Be sure that it has a good grip, lightweight and flexible.
  4. Choose shoes that are made of breathable material such as cotton, canvass or leather. Plastic shoes are not applicable to babies. This can make babies’ feet sweat that can lead to fungal infection. Choose shoes that prevent rubbing that can cause blisters.
  5. Let the baby walk with the shoes. Make sure that she is comfortable when she walks or stands. Make sure that it is not too loose and not too fit.
  6. Once she started wearing the shoes, check out for sores and blisters. Replace the baby’s shoes if needed.
  1. Check on the babies’ socks’ size too.
  2. Babies’ feet should be measured every 6 to 8 weeks since it grows about two shoe size every year.
  3. Ditch second-hand shoes since it will not give your baby the right support. It has been worn out and molded with other baby’s feet that can be uncomfortable for your baby.
  4. Choose shoes that fasten with laces, buckle or velcro. It holds the heel in place preventing damage on the baby’s toes.

A final note

Parents can be very excited as their babies get ready for their first steps. But it is always important to know when is the right time to buy and put them in their baby shoes. Shoes can support and protect babies’ feet when they started to walk outdoors. But putting it too early cannot help them walk faster or better. Instead, it can only hamper balance and coordination and babies’ feet development as well.
