As a new parent, one of the most intimidating tasks is learning how to change a diaper. It may take several tries to get it right, but don’t worry – you’ll get the hang of it! Here are the basics of diaper changing so that you can feel confident in caring for your baby.
How to change a diaper: Gather your supplies
First and foremost, gather everything you need before you begin. This includes a fresh diaper, wipes, and any rash cream if necessary. Before changing your baby’s diaper make sure that you have easy access to all of these items. It is also helpful to have a clean area that is at a comfortable height for you to work on. Lastly, make sure your baby is in a safe place during the process – never leave them unattended!
Unfasten and remove the dirty diaper
Once your supplies are gathered, unwrap and remove the dirty diaper from around baby’s bottom. If there is any mess or solid waste on their skin then use wet wipes to clean up. Make sure that all areas are wiped down completely and dry with a soft cloth or paper towel before continuing.
Put On the Clean Diaper
Next comes the clean diaper! Place it underneath your baby and make sure it covers their entire bottom evenly. Securely fasten both sides of the tabs according to directions on the package (generally starting at one side and working towards the other). Keep in mind that diapers come in different sizes; always double check that you have selected the correct one for your baby’s age/weight range prior to beginning this process.
Diapering may seem intimidating at first but don’t worry – with practice it will soon become second nature! Remember to keep all supplies within reach, wipe off any messes before putting on a new diaper, select an appropriate size based on your baby’s age/weight range, and secure firmly on both sides of tabs once finished. With these steps in mind, changing diapers like a pro will be no problem at all!
