According to studies, it is said that as your baby grows and develops, changes will be occurred to prepare them for the new world of flavor that awaits them. Around 4-7 months old; babies start teething when they begin to erupt through their gums. This is a painful time in their life. Babies that are beginning to teeth, will often show signs of discomfort, including:
- Acting extremely fussy, for no apparent reason
- Excessive drooling
- Chewing on their toys and other objects
You may not be able to see or feel the teeth for quite a while after your baby starts fussing about them, but they are growing in nonetheless. Teething is considered as a normal part of development, even if you and your baby may find it stressful. You can help your child find comfort through offering them specially designed teething toys, or simply give them a damp washrag. For added comfort; their sore gums will be eased when putting these toys in the refrigerator. Also, temporary relief will be provided to them.
You can also help soothe your baby by rubbing the gums so as to provide a counter pressure that relieves the pain. Do this only if the tooth is still deep inside the gum; A newly forming bruise is not wanted to be accidentally pressed by you.

Don’t forget your baby’s skin
You and your baby might be more worried about those sore and painful gums than the lips that are covering them, but the excess drool teething that is created can cause an equally irritating rash on your baby’s skin. You can help out by keeping your baby’s skin as dry as possible and applying a moisturizing baby lotion to the skin affected by the drooling.
Things to avoid when your baby starts teething
While years ago rubbing peppermint schnapps or even brandy on the baby’s gums were considered the best ways to give relief, now it is known that an infant’s body can be poisoned by that tiny amount of alcohol. It is advised to not use any kind of alcohol on your baby, even in the smallest amounts.
You will also be wanted to avoid giving your baby hard foods to chew on. While a frozen banana might have seemed like a great way to provide something cold and hard to chew on; it can break apart under your baby’s feverish chewing and accidentally choke your baby. Anything that will come apart while your baby is chewing on it, should be avoided to be given to them.
It gets better!
It is known that teething lasts for as much as two years of your baby’s life. The good news is that the first few teeth are the worst, and after they cut through the rest seem to go a lot easier. Doctors are unsure why teething gets easier after the first few teeth, but when you and your baby are suffering, knowing that better times are just around the corner can be comfort indeed.
