Kids are said to be picky eaters. But with the proper choice of ingredients, plus a tasty recipe to pair it with, it will never be hard to make them eat. A parent can also add some healthy twist to create healthier and equally delicious versions of a simple dish.
Wraps can look appetizing to kids, especially if creatively prepared. One of the common ingredients in making wraps are corn tortilla. Corn tortilla, or tortilla as it is simply called, is a thin, round unleavened bread which is very common in Mexico and Central America.
Today, it has been very common in a family’s kitchen. Numerous recipes use tortilla that kids can surely appreciate. Here are some of them.
Banana tortilla wraps
Ingredients:
- 1 pc 6 inch-corn tortilla
- 2 tbsps peanut butter
- 1 banana
- 1 tbsp honey
- 4 strawberries
- ¼ cup of pretzels
- 2 tbsp raisins
Directions:
_ Mix peanut butter and honey. Spread it on the tortilla.
_ Put a banana in the middle and sprinkle the raisins.
_ Wrap like a burrito and serve.
Peanut butter and jelly wrap
Ingredients:
- 1 pc tortilla
- 1 scoop of peanut butter
- 1 scoop jelly
Directions:
_ Lay the tortilla. Spread the peanut butter in its center, leaving an inch around the edges.
_ Spread a thin layer of jam or jelly over the peanut butter.
_ Roll up the tortilla. Start by folding each side.
_ Once done, cut the wrap in half with a knife.
Ham and cheese tortilla wraps
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ¼ cup mayonnaise or salad dressing
- ¼ cup sour cream
- 1 can whole kernel corn, drained
- 10 pcs 6-inch corn tortillas
- 10 thin slices of ham
Directions:
_ Mix cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, and corn.
_ Put a slice of ham on each tortilla. Spread 2 tablespoons of the mixture over the ham.
_ Wrap and serve.
_ You can add cilantro before wrapping if you want.
Vegetable tortilla wraps
Ingredients:
- 3 pcs 6-inch corn tortillas
- 3 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup sour cream
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ¼ cup chopped red bell pepper
- 2 tbsp sliced ripe olives, chopped
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
Directions:
_ Mix all ingredients in a bowl except the corn tortillas.
_ Spread about ½ cup if the filling over one side of each tortilla.
_ Tightly roll the tortilla up. Repeat the process with the remaining tortillas and cheese mixture.
_ Serve.
Cream cheese tortilla roll-ups
Ingredients:
- 1 tortilla wrap
- 1 tbsp cream cheese
- 1 tsp honey
- Granola
- 3 pcs strawberries, chopped
- 8 pcs raspberries
Directions:
_ Heat the tortilla in a microwave for 15 seconds, just enough to make it slightly soft.
_ Spread cream cheese over the tortilla, all the way to the edges.
_ Put a little honey over the cream cheese. Topped with granola.
_ Scatter the chopped strawberries and raspberries over the granola.
_ Roll the wrap tightly. Make sure that both ends are tucked in.
_ Slice the wraps into two or four pieces and serve.
Tortilla pinwheels
Ingredients:
- 1 tortilla wrap
- 1 tbsp cream cheese
- 3 slices of ham
- Baby spinach leaves
Directions:
_ Heat the tortilla in a microwave for 15 seconds or until it warms and softened.
_ Lay the tortilla. Spread the cream cheese on the tortilla, all the way to the edges.
_ Put the ham slices at the center of the wrap.
_ Top with spinach leaves.
_ Roll as tightly as possible. Be sure that the edges are tucked in.
_ Slice and serve.
Pizza Wraps
Ingredients:
- 1 medium-large tortilla
- 2 tbsp pizza sauce
- 1 stick light string cheese
- A dash of Italian seasoning
- A dash of garlic powder
- A dash of onion powder
- ¼ cup chopped tomatoes
- ¼ cup chopped spinach leaves
- 1 tbsp of parmesan cheese
- Pepperoni
Directions:
_ Place tortilla in a microwavable plate and heat for 10 seconds or until warm.
_ Spread sauce on the center of the tortilla. Sprinkle it with the spices.
_ Top with spinach, tomatoes, pepperoni, and cheese.
_ Wrap the tortilla similar to a burrito. Fold the sides in and roll from the bottom.
_ Place the wrap in a microwave-safe plate, the seam side facing down. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds.
_ Transfer in an oven toaster and cook until hot on the inside, crispy on the outside. It will take about 3 minutes.
_ Serve.
_ When baked, corn tortilla transforms into crispy nachos, tacos or tortilla chips which is also appealing to the kids. Here are some recipes featuring baked or fried tortillas as ingredients.
Pizza nachos
Ingredients:
- 8 pcs 8-inch tortilla
- ¼ cup melted butter
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- ½ cup pizza sauce
- ½ cup mini pepperoni
- ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
Directions:
_ Preheat oven to 350F.
_ Cut each tortilla to form 8 triangles.
_ In a bowl, mix butter, parmesan, and all the spices. Add the tortillas and toss for even coating.
_ Lay the tortillas in a lined baking sheet without overlapping. Bake for 8 to minutes until crispy. Watch out for they can crisp quickly.
_ Pile the nachos in a separate pan. Top with pizza sauce, mozzarella and pepperoni.
_ Bake for another 8 minutes until the cheese melt.
Cheese tacos
Ingredients:
- Corn tortillas
- Small slices Cheddar cheese
- Butter
- Salsa
- Add-ons:
- Slices of Avocado, Apple, Lettuce or Strips of cooked or leftover meat
Directions:
_ Lay the tortilla and spread butter on it.
_ Put the tortilla in a hot pan, buttered side down.
_ Using a spatula, flip the tortilla to the other side. Flip it again. Repeat until both sides of the tortilla have butter.
_ Let the tortilla sit in a pan until it bubbles.
_ Add cheese on one side of the tortilla. Allow room for the cheese to melt.
_ Flip the other side of the tortilla, which do not have cheese over the other half with cheese, similar when making an omelet. You now have a cheese taco.
_ Leave the taco on one side of the pan. Repeat the process to produce more tacos.
_ You can add in more filling by opening the tacos and inert ingredients that you might like. It can either be slices of avocado, apple, lettuce or cooked meat.
